The Unhappy Ship

For a number of years the ex Royal Naval water carrier s.s. FRESHSPRING had lain in Bristol City Docks. That is until her owner in 1991 decided to moor her in Gloucester Docks. This film begins with the towage along the 16 mile Gloucester & Sharpness Canal from Sharpness to Gloucester.

The owner hadn’t reckoned with the red tape that greeted him! Life was made so difficult that he had no choice but to have the FRESHSPRING towed back down the canal to Sharpness. From there she was towed to the small hamlet of Collow Pill, near to Newnham on Severn, where she has lies to this day looking very sorry for herself.

Tugs at Gloucester

Featuring 11 tugs on the canal during the annual Tugs Weekend at Gloucester during 1991.

Tugs in action include: STANEGARTH, KENNET, INFLUENCE, MAYFLOWER,SPEEDWELL, THOMAS, SEVERN PROGRESS, JUBILEE, CHIMERA, RESOLUTE LADY, and FREIGHT MOVER.
