It all started with Chris Witts working as mate on the two grain barges which carried wheat for Allied Mills from Sharpness to their mill at Tewkesbury. Each day whilst in Gloucester Lock numerous tourists would ask him “where you going, what you carrying ....”.

Chris wrote a leaflet and called it the Grain Trade, then he wrote more about different aspects of the Severn, eventually collating them all into this book, Tales of the River Severn.

Sadly the grain trade on the Severn has finished but this little book remains as popular as ever!
