Bewdley is a town of narrow winding streets, making it a pleasure to explore. The prosperity that made the building of the town possible came from the port on the banks of the Severn. Bewdley was an important collecting point for goods manufactured in the Midlands to be shipped from here to Bristol and beyond.

All this changed with the building of the Staffs & Worcester Canal at Stourport in 1771. The town wanted nothing to do with James Brindley's “stinking ditch” and so settled for a genteel decline, a town now time warped in the late 18th century. To view Bewdley's special qualities it must be viewed from the riverside.
