The City of Gloucester welcomed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to celebrate the regeneration of the docks area. It was her visit to Gloucester Docks and she made a grand entrance on HMS EXPRESS, having boarded the vessel a little way down the canal at Romans Quay.
Having gone into the dock basin the vessel swung around and passed through Llanthony Bridge to moor alongside the new Gloucestershire College. The Queen was then escorted into the college via the old Llanthony Priory to meet the official party. This included the Right Worshipful Mayor of Gloucester, Chris Witts, who when presented to Her Majesty she told him how she liked the old and the new.
Chris then had the great honour of sitting next to the Queen for lunch and soon they were engaged in conversation about almost everything. During the conversation Chris was able to inform Her Majesty about his life on the Severn and how he began working from this very area.
A great honour for the city and a great honour for Chris Witts.
