Gloucestershire Police, together with officers from the Environment Agency, served a warrant at a Gloucester depot on Monday and seized a boat which is believed to have been used in illegal fishing for elvers.
A licence is required to fish for these increasingly rare delicacy which sells for thousands of pounds a kilo in Japan. It is illegal to fish for elvers on the River Severn from a boat. For centuries they have been fished with the traditional style of nets as depicted below.
Elver fishermen stand to make thousands of pounds during the season which runs from February through to early May. Unfortunately it is becoming something of a dangerous pastime as a few fish without a licence and get tough with those who dare stand and fish from their tump!
