DOG SAVED FROM RIVER SEVERN

Two Shropshire postal workers today carried out an early morning rescue after discovering a tiny dog trapped up to its neck in mud in the River Severn.Postman Gordon Home and his line manager Alan Davies sprung into action after hearing the little Jack Russell's distressed yelps as they made their way to the sorting office in Shrewsbury. Mr Home, of Sutton Farm, said: "I was cycling to work this morning at about 5.50am and was crossing Castle Walk bridge when I heard a dog barking. "It sounded distressed so myself and a colleague, Alan Davies, who was with me went to investigate." The pair made a search on both sides of the river before finding the terrified pet in the water and up to his neck in mud. "I lay on the bank, reached out for him and grabbed him by the scruff of the neck. He was in a right mess and it is anyone's guess how long he had been there," he said.
