Longest Vessel on the Severn |
| Crowds gathered
at Gloucester Lock yesterday to see skipper/owner Graham Thompson safely
navigate the large Dutch barge TRANSIENT into Gloucester Lock from the River
Severn. At 47 metres long the TRANSIENT is the longest vessel to have ever navigated the Severn above Gloucester. Recently the East Channel of the Parting had been dredged to allow this long barge to navigate for the first 3 miles above Gloucester. There was doubt whether the barge would be able to get around the tight bends. Graham recently purchased this ex Rhine Barge and brought her from Rotterdam on the long voyage to Sharpness. The vessel is to be used to carry sand and gravel from Ripple, near Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire, to Gloucester, commencing early March. Mid morning and Graham eased the TRANSIENT out of the lock to confidently steer her along The Quay and on towards the top of The Parting 3 miles away. Surprisingly good time was made and in less than an hour was out in the wide part of the river, swinging around to make the return trip back to The Docks. No problems on the return trip and soon was safely locking up into Gloucester Docks. |
