Longest Vessel to Trade on the River Severn Above Gloucester |
| Crowds gathered
at Gloucester Lock to skipper/owner Graham Thompson safely navigate the large
Dutch barge TRANSIENT into Gloucester Lock from the Gloucester & Sharpness
Canal. He recently purchased this ex Rhine Barge and brought her from Rotterdam on the long voyage to Sharpness. The vessel is to be used to carry sand and gravel from Ripple, near Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire, to Gloucester. Unsure whether the barge was too long to fit in Gloucester Lock trials took place, first by going in bow first, then back out, swung around in Gloucester Docks and taken back in stern first. The TRANSIENT fitted in, just! If not then Graham would have had to taken the vessel into dry-dock to have a section of the hull cut out, thus shortening the vessel. Without doubt, at 47 metres long, the TRANSIENT will be the longest vessel to have traded on the River Severn. First though the Severn above Gloucester will have to be dredged and the bends in The Parting taken off before this barge can navigate the river. |
