MARGARET BECKETT VISITS FLOOD SHCEMEGovernment minister Margaret Beckett is visiting Shrewsbury today to be shown the town's flood-prone River Severn and the locations for a new flood protection scheme.Mrs Beckett, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has been invited to the town by Councillor Danny Moore, leader of Shrewsbury Borough Council. She will be taken on a tour of the riverbank and shown the locations in Frankwell for the new multi-million pound flood protection scheme. Mrs Beckett will then attend a private members party for further discussion of the council's plan to provide flood defences. Councillor Danny Moore said today he was delighted that Mrs Beckett had accepted the invitation to see how the council hoped to protect local people from the disastrous floods. "The Shrewsbury Flood Alleviation Scheme will get under way in Frankwell and will include a combination of earth embankments, walls and innovative demountable defences," he said. "The Labour Government is providing extra investment and the Labour led council has worked with the Environment Agency and others to create a comprehensive scheme. "There is no bigger issue in Shrewsbury than the danger of floods. We have had Tony Blair, John Prescott and now Margaret Beckett coming to Shrewsbury to pledge their support. And now the Labour Government is providing us with the investment we need to better protect local people." |
