Shipping Returns to the Canal

Sadly no cargo ship had traded to Gloucester Docks for six years, until that is, June 2004. Then a large German coaster travelled the 16 miles along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to berth close to the city alongside the Bristol Road.

The KORMORAN came to load a cargo of water treatment equipment to take to Egersund in Norway from Gloucester based company Axia who construct oilfield equipment for use by the North Sea oilrigs.

With 16 bridges to pass through it took almost four hours for the KORMORAN to travel along the canal to Gloucester. The coaster had a canal pilot on board to assist with making sure the ship passed through the bridges without damage. A ship of this has only has about 200 millimetres either side as she passes through each bridge and some are located on difficult bends!
