Poachers on the Severn

There is to be a crackdown on elver fishermen who annually fish the Severn with no licence. With a price to be had of up to £300 a kilo it is increasingly attractive to people who have no regard to the reputation of genuine fishermen.

It is not just not having a licence which is the problem. They do criminal damage to fencing, gates and stiles, some even cut down the timber with a chainsaw to light a fire to keep warm. Now the Police, British Waterways and Environment Agency are to work together to combat this anti-social behaviour. Anyone caught fishing illegally could end up with a £2,500 fine!

Visit Wildlife on my site to learn all about elvering.
