For years they
have been talking about moving aggregate on the Severn at Ryall,
Worcestershire. Now it could become a reality. To begin with the aggregate will
be moved in barges for only a short distance, from the pits at Ryall to a point
of discharge at Ripple.
Following this, plans are being discussed to transport
this aggregate down the Severn to the Readymix plant at Hempsted, Gloucester on
the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. Before they can do this though the river
approach to Gloucester from the top of The Parting, a distance of 3 miles, will
have to be dredged.
An Act of Parliament states that the river depth between
Gloucester and Worcester should be at least 9 feet. However a small motor
cruiser drawing only 4 feet became stuck on the mud in The Parting earlier this
summer! It would be extremely costly and difficult to dredge The Parting, in
the 1950s and 60s it was kept deep by the large tanker barges of John Harker
Ltd regularly running deeply laden from Gloucester to Worcester. |
