New Tunnel Under the Severn

On the 25th October 1960 a gas pipeline linking Sharpness with Lydney was severed when the Severn Railway bridge was partly demolished following a collision between two tanker barges. Now once again these two communities are to be linked again

Said to be one of the largest drilling operations to take place in England, Transco are drilling under the Severn to lay the new pipework. At a cost of £1.2m the gas pipeline will travel for 3.6km underground.

Beginning on the Lydney side of the river a 250 tonne rig will carry a specialist equipment to drill to a depth of 50 metres. The tunnel will eventually travel under the railway line, Severn and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
